Parenting By Objective

Letter from the Eyres

Values Parenting is built on the concept of "Parenting
by Objective,"
(P.B.O.) which, in a nutsheel, involves
focusing and concentrating on a particular Value or principle
for an entire month.

Years ago, Harvard-trained management consultant Richard Eyre taught his business clients to improve their company's performance by practicing "management by objective." People are always more effective when they have clear goals. The same principle and the same approach applies to the most important management challenge of all -- the management of our families! For years Richard and Linda Eyre have taught parents throughout the world how to practice "Parenting by Objective" which involves being proactive, having a parenting "defense," and reacting to various problems.

The center or keystone of the "parenting by objective" approach is the "Value of the Month" program wherein families with kids between five and twelve years of age focus their attention and their effort on one basic value each month (preschoolers focus on a corresponding "joy"). This simplifies parenting and helps parents concentrate on something positive that can really make a difference. The twelve values and the approaches for teaching each one come from the Eyres' New York Times #1 best seller, Teaching Your Children Values.

One of the biggest problems parents have is that too often they are just reacting to what their children do, instead of assuming responsibility for the situation, taking control, and becoming proactive parents.

If parents have no clear or specific objectives for their parenting, all they can do is try to react properly. But if they have clear goals in mind in terms of what they want to teach their children,

  • they can act,
  • they can take initiative,
  • they can gain control of their family's destiny.

With "Parenting by Objective" families work together on setting goals and focusing on learning values that help build and fortify the family infrastructure. As you click through this site, you will notice how everything is based on and centered in making our families our highest priority and going after parenting with energy and purpose.
